The intergenerational cast of the Universalist (“UU”) Players are staging the award-winning musical comedy Honk! Jr. on Friday, March 27, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29, 2015, at 1:30 p.m. at the Universalist Church, 433 Fern St. in West Hartford, CT.

Honk! Jr. is based on “The Ugly Duckling,” by Hans Christian Anderson, with book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe and music by George Stiles. Honk! Jr. is fun for all ages and reminds us celebrate individuality and bullying can be uglier than the most awkward-looking duckling.

Honk! Jr. is presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International of New York and tells the story of Ugly, who — because of her different looks and behavior — is outcast by many of the barnyard animals. Her mother, however, tries desperately to defend Ugly, as her duckling siblings tease her. Separated from her loyal mother, and pursued by a hungry cat, Ugly must find her way home, while finding real friendship and discovering her true beauty.

The UU Players is the resident theatre company of the Universalist Church in West Hartford. For the past 30+ years, an intergenerational cast of student and adult actors have staged an annual, family-friendly theatre production.

Honk! Jr. is directed by West Hartford-resident Gretchen Fountain. “In a world with cyber bullies and social alienation for being ‘different,’ Honk! Jr. has an important message for our community,” said Fountain. “Especially those of us who might not feel like we fit in. Our hope is that Honk! Jr. reminds us to remember the ‘Golden Rule’ and to be yourself.”

Tickets: $12 for adults and $6 for children under 16 years old

Tickets are available at the door or by calling (860) 233-3669 (x309) for reservations.
