Kingswood Oxford School is joining the National Girl & Women In Sports Day movement and will be hosting a KO Girl In Sports Day program on Feb. 3.

The event will be a free, fun-filled day of sports for girls and young women from 8-14 years of age and participants should arrive dressed to take part in each session. KO will provide necessary equipment, but if you have a stick, glove or racquet you would like to use, bring it!

National Girls and Women in Sports Day started in 1987 as a day to remember Olympic volleyball player Flo Hyman and her achievements and work to ensure equality for women’s sports. Since that time, National Girl & Women In Sports Day has evolved into a day to acknowledge the past and recognize current sports achievements, the positive impact of sports participation on girls and women and the continuing struggle for equality and access for women in sports.

Having been involved with National Girl & Women In Sports Day throughout her career, Kingswood Oxford athletic director Debbie Fiske feels it is a good time for the Wyvern athletic community to become involved.

“I have been involved with the origination of this program for many years and decided with KO’s new facilities, we needed to bring this empowering event for young girls to KO,” Fiske said. “The opportunities for girls and women in sport have certainly come along way in the past 40-plus years, but it is important to teach the next generation of young women the history of Title IX and girls in sport so improvement can continue to grow and young girls feel free to dream big in the sports world.”

After registration and check-in, the day will start with a welcome and warm up before a day filled with fun and sports.

The event will be broken into sessions and participants will rotate through a number of different sports and activities. Three different sessions will feature soccer, softball and volleyball, track, yoga, and lacrosse and a session with tennis, field hockey ,and basketball.

Each 40-minute session will include a short clinic by KO coaches and student athletes and participants will be able to choose from the activities in each session giving them a chance to try something new or play something they already love.

A team-building challenge session and lunch break are also included and there will be prizes awarded for poster, trivia, and spirit contests.

Register by Jan. 28 to take part in this unique event that celebrates and encourages girls and women in sports.

Registration forms can be submitted to Kingswood Oxford athletic director Debbie Fiske at [email protected] or faxed to 860-232-2095. Forms can also be printed and mailed to Kingswood Oxford School, Attn: Debbie Fiske, 170 Kingswood Rd., West Hartford, CT 06119.
