Gov. Ned Lamont earned 75% of the delegates at the Connecticut Democratic Party’s convention Saturday to earn the party’s endorsement, but Hamden state Rep. Josh Elliott’s “people first” message gave him more than enough delegates to force a primary.
Elliott challenged the sitting governor on a progressive platform and gathered 501 out of 1,968 delegates, or 25%, to Lamont’s 1,468. He only needed 15% to force a primary. But while Elliott carried a majority of delegates in a handful of towns – including his home city of Hamden – most of the delegates from the state’s larger cities voted overwhelmingly in Lamont’s favor. In many of the state’s small- and medium-sized communities, Lamont also outpolled Elliot roughly 3-to-1.
