To the Editor:

After nearly two years of major public health emergencies – from COVID-19, police violence, mass evictions, environmental injustice, extreme weather, and more – we now know that these conditions affect and build on each other. That’s why when it comes to federal funding and resources, Congress cannot afford to ignore climate change.

In Connecticut, we want to reduce the use of fossil fuels, increase the energy efficiency of residential, commercial, and municipal structures, increase the resilience of power production and distribution, and become more resilient in relation to rising sea levels. Many towns and cities in Connecticut have clean energy task forces that work on these goals. Nationwide, more than 180 towns and cities have committed to the goal of achieving 100% clean energy by 2050.

Other groups in the community have shown their commitment also, as reported in We-Ha news [West Hartford Synagogue Celebrates Completion of Solar Energy System, July 30, 2021]. Democrats in Congress like John Larson, Richard Blumenthal, and Chris Murphy must pass a clean energy-focused budget bill that invests in protecting our climate by including a clean energy payment program and clean energy tax incentives that would help towns like ours transition justly and equitably to 100% clean energy.

Representative Larson, Senator Blumenthal, and Senator Murphy, it’s time to represent the will of the people. We cannot afford to wait, and neither can the people of Connecticut. Residents of West Hartford – Call your senators and representative now and ask them to take a strong stand in support of federal action on climate change. Together, can create a better future.
