Dear Editor,

Most of us have similar personal priorities and expect the same things from our government: A strong education system, access to healthcare for our family and friends, a safe and inviting place to live, a good job, and the opportunity to improve our lives and community.

Regardless of political party, it is safe to say we all agree on this.

I am a West Hartford Town Councilor, and I am running for State Representative in the 18th district for West Hartford.

If I were running purely on social issues, I would probably still be a Democrat.

Yet Connecticut’s economy is broken.

In fact, Connecticut’s economy shrank in 2016 and 2017, the second worst performance of any state in the country, according to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis.

Our broken economy hurts everyone. The poor, working class, disabled and senior citizens – those who need our help – end up suffering the most in a broken economy.

When the Town of West Hartford raises car taxes by 28 percent, a working, single mom must sacrifice diapers or food to pay for it. When taxes keep going up and middle class income is flat, people start to move to other states. That is why I voted against the 2018-19 budget for West Hartford.

As a compassionate state, Connecticut leads on social issues. I plan to continue to lead on these issues as your State Representative.

My first priority will be fixing our broken economy for all of us.

I started my career as an entry-level financial analyst, earned my MBA at nights and on weekends, and became a senior executive in financial services. I know how to turnaround a business, how to set and manage a budget, how to find and implement cost savings, and how to innovate and lead. These skills matter now more than ever. These skills set me apart from the other candidates.

For my campaign, we use the color purple and our them is “Rebuilding CT Together” because I want to focus on our collective love for each other, for Connecticut, for our community and for West Hartford.

Let’s focus on our common desire to fix Connecticut for all of us.

Your life is the culmination of the choices you make. We have made some poor choices over the years to get to this broken economy state. Let’s put aside the blame and the labels. Let’s focus on fixing things together.

Vote for Mary Fay for State Representative, so we can rebuild CT together.

Best Regards,

Mary M. Fay
West Hartford Town Councilor
and State Rep candidate for the 18th district
