Superintendent of Schools Tom Moore announced Tuesday that Jason Siegal has been named director of athletics for West Hartford Public Schools. Siegal will take over for Betty Remigino-Knapp who is retiring at the end of June after 20 years in the position.

“This is a challenging position, overseeing athletes, coaches, scheduling and facilities at two high schools,” Moore said in an email.

An impressive field of candidates from throughout the country were interviewed by parents, student-athletes, coaches, teachers, and administrators, and Siegel demonstrated that he has “the skill set necessary to be a great leader in West Hartford,” Moore said.

“In my conversations with him, it is clear that Mr. Siegal understands the commitment that our student athletes make, not just to represent their team on and off the field, but in the classroom,” said Moore.

Siegal is currently dean of students at University High School of Science and Engineering in Hartford, where he has worked since 2004, originally as a physical education and health teacher. He also serves as athletic director at UHSSE, where he has helped bring 17 varsity sports to a school that has no athletic facilities. Siegal has also been a wrestling and softball coach.

Siegal has a bachelor’s in physical education and a master’s in educational leadership from Central Connecticut State University, and completed his sixth year certificate at Sacred Heart University.

Moore said that he is happy to welcome Siegal to the West Hartford Public Schools family. “I look forward to working with Jason to ensure that West Hartford students have great opportunities to participate in a multitude of sports, and to experience the thrill of competition,” Moore said.
