West Hartford Police and a regional accident investigation team are on the scene of a crash that claimed the life of an elderly pedestrian on Park Road, just east of Oakwood Avenue, on Sunday night.
Few details were available late Sunday because the investigation is still in its early stages, ongoing, and active, West Hartford Police Capt. Michael Perruccio told reporters at the scene.
Perruccio said that the incident happened at approximately 8 p.m. Sunday.
The person who was struck was a woman was in her 80s, Perruccio said, but her name has not been released.
When officers arrived on the scene they provided medical attention to the woman, he said. She was transported from the scene via ambulance and pronounced dead at the hospital.
No information about the driver of the vehicle that struck the woman, or the type of vehicle involved has been released. The driver remained on the scene and was speaking with police, Perruccio said.
Park Road will be shut down between Oakwood avenue and Beverly Road while the investigation is ongoing, likely most of the night, said Perruccio.
Police could not comment if the weather was a factor, and could not say where the pedestrian was when she was struck.
Perruccio said that other agencies are assisting West Hartford Police with this case, including the Metro Accident Investigation Team. The Detective Division is also participating in the investigation.
“We want to be able to be a very thorough and complete investigation,” Perruccio said.
