An occupant of a single-family home in West Hartford was able to self-evacuate but has been hospitalized with burn injuries, and the house sustained significant damage, officials said.
According to Deputy Chief Jarrad Smith, units responded to the report of a structure fire at 516 Park Road at approximately 8:54 a.m. Wednesday.
Upon arrival at the home – which is located directly across from the I-84 Exit 43 ramp – firefighters confirmed an active fire visible on the second floor “and initiated an aggressive interior fire attack while performing a primary search of the residence,” Smith said.

One occupant of the home had self-evacuated prior to the arrival of firefighters, but had sustained “serious burn injuries,” Smith said. The victim was treated at the scene by firefighter/paramedics, and was transported to an undisclosed hospital for further treatment, officials said.
According to Chief Greg Priest, no further information about the victim, or the presence of other occupants, was available. There were not any pets in the home, he said.
The fire was knocked down within minutes of units arriving on the scene, and officially declared under control at 9:35 a.m., Smith said. The second floor and attic sustained fire damage, and there was smoke damage throughout the home.
The West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the blaze, along with the West Hartford Police Department, and the Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit, Smith said.

The West Hartford Fire Department appreciates the assistance of UConn Health Center Fire Rescue at the scene, as well as to the City of Hartford Fire Department and Newington Fire Department for providing mutual aid covering the community while West Hartford units were engaged at the scene.
Multiple units from American Medical Response were also at the scene, assisting with care of any patients and ensuring firefighter safety due to the high heat. No further injuries were reported, Smith said.
