For the third season in a row, Conard and Simsbury girls lacrosse teams met with a Central Connecticut Conference championship on the line.

After Conard won the previous two CCC titles and entered this year’s championship game undefeated, it was Simsbury’s turn to celebrate.

The second-seeded Trojans defeated top-seeded Conard 9-3 Thursday at Conard High School, ending the Red Wolves’ perfect season and preventing a third straight conference championship.

Conard (17-1) entered the title game with a spotless 17-0 record after a dominant 19-0 victory over Northwest Catholic in the CCC semifinals. Simsbury (17-1) advanced with a 16-3 win over Hall and had only one loss on the season entering the championship – a regular-season 9-8 defeat against Conard on May 5.

From the opening draw, Simsbury controlled the momentum.

The Trojans scored immediately to take an early lead and never looked back, building a 6-1 advantage by halftime. Conard struggled throughout the afternoon to generate quality scoring opportunities against Simsbury’s defense, while the Red Wolves’ defense worked to limit chances and keep the game within reach.

Despite those efforts, Simsbury maintained control in the second half and secured the 9-3 victory, claiming the CCC championship and avenging its regular-season loss.

The defeat marked Conard’s first loss of the season and snapped the program’s bid for a third consecutive conference title.

The Red Wolves now turn their attention to the Class LL state tournament, where they will enter as one of the favorites, being seeded fourth. Conard faces the challenge of competing without one of their star juniors, Ashley Gorman, a Division I commit who suffered a season-ending knee injury several weeks ago in a game against Greenwich.

Conard will begin its state tournament run at home on Tuesday when it hosts Shelton at 4:30 p.m.
