On Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 5:30-7 p.m., Conard High School will host the Second Annual Volunteer Fair.

This free event, located in the Conard cafeteria, is open to the public, and will feature high impact non-profit organizations that provide volunteer opportunities for teens.

In addition to the organizations, everyone attending will have the opportunity to complete an onsite community service activity at the “Facing Difference Challenge” station. Founded by the Bezos Foundation, Students Rebuild, Facing Difference Challenge invites anyone to draw and submit a self-portrait. For every self-portrait submitted, the Bezos Foundation will donate $3 to one of three programs in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, and South Caucus that “are working to help young people overcome conflict and tension related to difference and to build peace.”

Student artists will be on hand to facilitate this station which will have plenty of paper, colored pencils, and several mirrors for contributors of all levels of talent. All self-portraits will be mailed following the event on behalf of the Conard High School National Honor Society.

Conard Assistant Principal Lindsay Tringali is a strong advocate for the benefits of community service, which provides students with pre-work experience as well as opportunities to connect with a local organization through fun and rewarding volunteer activities.

The inaugural volunteer fair event was created and coordinated in 2016 by Hall High senior Olivia Mitchell, who earned the Girl Scout Gold Award for her project. The award was presented last June by Mayor Shari Cantor, who also plans on making an appearance at the fair. Mitchell, who is a now a freshman at UConn in Storrs, will also be present to host the fair.

Organizations that plan to attend include:

Playhouse on Park
Journey Home
YMCA, West Hartford
Riverfront Recapture
Celebrate West Hartford
Relay Hartford
Heads Up Hartford
Ovarian Cancer Society
Miracle League of Connecticut
Noah Webster House & West Hartford Historical Society
