On Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 5-7 p.m., the Women’s Leadership Center at the University of Saint Joseph will host Title IX: 37 Words for Equity and Justice. The event will feature a panel of powerful women in sport, media, and law to discuss clips from the ESPN four-part docuseries 37 Words.

The film celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the passage of Title IX, the 1972 amendment passed by Congress to forbid discrimination based on gender.

The 37 words in the amendment are: “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”

Panelists and moderators include:

  • Donna de Varona, Olympic Gold Medalist in Swimming, Activist, Television Sportscaster
  • Leander Dolphin, Managing Partner, Shipman & Goodwin LLP
  • Clare Smith Marash, Producer, 37 Words
  • Carol Stiff, President, Stiff Sports Media Consulting, LLC

Before the main event, attendees are invited to participate in a networking event, where they can connect with professionals based on their career field of interest. The networking session will take place from 5-6 p.m., and light refreshments will be served. The program then moves into Hoffman Auditorium to screen clips from the film and hear from the distinguished panel.

The event will be held at the Bruyette Athenaeum on the University of Saint Joseph campus at 1678 Asylum Avenue in West Hartford, CT.
