West Hartford Women in Networking invites interested women to attend their September meeting which will feature Dr. Cathryn Addy, president of Tunxis Community College in Farmington.
Addy has been the president of Tunxis Community College since 1993. Prior to coming to Connecticut from the presidency of Berkshire Community College in Pittsfield, MA, her experience included service in higher education as an academic dean and campus director in Pennsylvania, a student services dean and counselor in Wyoming, and an English professor in Kansas and in upstate New York. She also helped to start, and was the co-owner, of a small t-shirt business, and spent some time as a consultant helping others write business plans to be used to secure funding for their projects.
Originally from Wichita, Kansas, Addy received her B.A. degree from Kansas State University, an M.A. from SUNY-Oswego, and a Ph.D. from The University of Texas. She also did graduate work at the University of Minnesota.
Addy moved to Bristol in 1998, and has served the Bristol community on a variety of boards of directors, including the Bristol Chamber of Commerce, Bristol Hospital, Wheeler Clinic, and the Women and Girls Fund of the Main Street Community Foundation. She also has chaired the board of a small chamber orchestra, The Connecticut Virtuosi. Addy has published one book on the community college presidency, many articles, and has appeared numerous times as a keynote speaker and workshop presenter.
While at Tunxis, Addy has witnessed its dramatic growth in enrollment and its physical plant expansion, with the acquisition of two adjacent pieces of property, and the construction of a new library and a new technology classroom building. Addy aspires to become a piano tuner one day but also intends to get back to her writing, with the dream of finally writing that Great American Novel. The meeting will be held on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2016, from 7:30-9:45 a.m., at Chatfield Brookdale, One Chatfield Dr. in West Hartford. In addition to Addy’s presentation, time will be available for networking and introductions. Breakfast snacks – and surprises – will also be available.
