Walk the Walk to Help WHC-TV Talk the Talk

West Hartford Community Television is holding its first ever family-friendly run/walk-a-thon.

Submitted by Jennifer Evans, WHC-TV Executive Director

West Hartford Community Television invites walkers and runners of all ages and skill levels to run, walk or stroll around town in the organization’s inaugural event on Saturday, June 2, from 9 to 11 a.m.

Participants will meet at the rear of Town Hall near the flagpoles and follow the “Center Walking Route” of the Trout Brook Trail which is a 1.1 mile loop. Participants may choose their course (number of loops) and go at their own pace. Walk one loop for the 1.1 mile course, two loops for 2.2 miles or the three loops for the full 5K.

  • Adults are $20, Students are $10, Kids aged 13 and under are free.
  • Family and pet friendly event.
  • Enjoy fun surprises along the way including a LIVE TV or Behind the Scenes path.
  • After-race celebration in Blue Back Square. Enjoy discounts to your favorite Blue Back Square businesses.

Along with registering for the 5K, there will also be a fundraising challenge! The individual or team that can raise the most money for WHC-TV will get a special prize. Visit www.whctv.org for more information.

The motto for this walk is “Walk the Walk so we can Talk the Talk” and will allow WHC-TV to raise the balance needed to pay for the server that keeps the channel on television and other critical capital needs. The first $10,000 was raised at a special Take 5 Fundraiser on March 2, 2018.

The avenues for funding are limited. West Hartford Community Television (WHC-TV) is a non-profit community media center. Due to state regulatory changes in 2007, the cable obligation to maintain studios was converted to a tax on video providers which goes into a cash fund managed by the Public Utility Regulatory Authority. These funds have been diverted by the state for use in budget mitigation and the fund closed for the past three years. Previously, the station applied and received grants from this fund which helped pay for new cameras, control room and energy efficient lighting.

Every time someone cuts the cord, the station loses around $8 from our operating budget and this number is down 10 percent over the last five years. WHC-TV is not in a position to simply expand its reach through expanded reach or advertising. The state prohibits telethons and commercial content. WHC-TV is hyper-local and non-commercial media and is so grateful for all of the people who give to support the use of media to build community.

WHC-TV’s greatest gift are the volunteers who donate their time, talent and support to help make the station go, both on camera and behind the scenes. WHC-TV is here for anyone who lives in West Hartford to come in and produce non-commercial programming for free. However, rapidly changing technology is expensive and it’s a challenge to keep pace.

We hope people will come out and support their hometown station: WHC-TV is for the community, by the community.
