The West Hartford American Legion Hayes-Velhage Post 96 visited Cub Scout Pack 161 at Duffy Elementary School on Oct. 22 to teach an Americanism class about our flag, its meaning, rules about the flag, how to retire the flag when it gets tattered or faded and the history of our flag.

Post members also looked at and talked about other flags: the POW-MIA flag and the police and firefighter flags, and different service branches and their respective flags and meanings.

Lastly, each boy or girl Cub Scout and their siblings got to learn how to fold flags properly and was allowed to take a small flag home. Participants also played a game to learn how to stand at attention and salute for when doing the Pledge of Allegiance or other Cub ceremonies when in uniform.

Parent volunteers Katherine Martinelli and Greg Jacobs are the current co-cubmasters of this Cub Scout Pack that has kids from multiple local elementary schools.
