Happy Day-after-the-Ides-of-March and Day-before-St.-Patrick’s-Day! That also means it’s Monday, March 16, we have reached the middle of March, and the first day of spring is at the end of this week.

Have I mentioned that I am so done with winter? When the snow really started melting and I saw these hardy guys poking their stems out of the ground a few days ago, I was tempted to send out a breaking news alert!

Another sure sign of spring is that people will be out shopping more, and outdoor dining will return. We will let you know as soon as those tables reappear on the sidewalks!

If you have tips about businesses opening or closing, or doing something worth sharing, please provide that information in the comments or email Ronni Newton at [email protected].

Here’s this week’s Buzz:

  • Francesca’s will soon open in West Hartford Center! The boutique, which also has locations in Glastonbury, Manchester, Canton, and several other nearby locations, is popular with a relatively young crowd that likes funky, one-of-a-kind, reasonably-priced clothing and accessories. According to the Francesca’s website: “Our boutiques offer an eclectic mix of carefully-curated clothing, bright baubles, bold accessories, and playful gifts that are as fun to give as they are to receive. Boutiques reveal an array of new arrivals almost daily, so you’ll always discover something special and amazing on every visit. And because we are a boutique, we only carry a few of each item, so everything you find is uniquely yours. You can kiss seeing your outfit twin at the party goodbye!” Francesca’s will be located at 985 Farmington Ave., right next to Lululemon.
  • A just-opened new business in West Hartford Center is Pixi Hair Studio. The new salon is located at 990 Farmington Ave., the former home of Fringe Hair Works which moved to 7 North Main St. in January.
  • Tuesday is St. Patrick’s Day, and if you’re craving a traditional Irish meal but don’t want to (or know how to) cook it yourself, Café Louise Catering has what you need. The special Irish menu, which includes favorites like corned beef and cabbage, Guiness brats, Shepherd’s Pie, and Irish soda bread, is available on Tuesday. If you want to pre-order, that needs to be done by 3 p.m. Monday. For more information, call 860-561-0160 or email [email protected]. Café Louise is located at 1156 New Britain Ave. in Elmwood.
  • Congratulations to West Hartford Attorney Katherine Scanlon, recently named managing partner of Reardon Scanlon Vodola Barnes LLP according to the Connecticut Law Tribune. Scanlon is a graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Law.
  • If you’re interested in business news about West Hartford – which of course you are if you are reading this column – you may want to attend the West Hartford Chamber of Commerce’s “Economic Development Update” on Thursday, March 26, from 11:30-1:30 p.m. at Wampanoag Country Club. Director of Community Services Mark McGovern will discuss the local economy, including new development throughout town, and will also answer questions at the end of his presentation.
