West Hartford Holding Dog License Poster Contest

The West Hartford Town Clerk’s Office and West Hartford Library are sponsoring a poster contest for elementary school age students with a message about dog licensing.

Submitted

June is dog license month in town clerks’ offices throughout the states.

The West Hartford Town Clerk’s Office, in collaboration with the West Hartford Library, is sponsoring a poster contest for kids in kindergarten through grade 5 to help publicize the importance of licensing your pet.

A prize will be awarded to one “artist” in the K-2 and one in the grades 3-5. The winners will have their posters printed and distributed among local restaurants, businesses and veterinarian offices.

To enter, create an 8.5-inch by 11-inch poster of original art encouraging people to register their dogs in June. Email a photo of your poster to [email protected], including your name, grade, address and email.

Town Clerk Essie Labrot stated that with current  budget cuts, individual notices for dog license renewals will not be sent out this year, and instead, she is hoping that our young people will help with publicizing the importance of having your dog licensed. Winners will be announced May 15, 2020.

According to state law, all dogs over 6 months of age must be registered and receive a dog tag annually.  The numbered tag serves as identification for any pet that may wander away from home. The annual cost for dog licenses is $19.00 for unaltered animals and $8.00 for neutered or spayed animals.

In addition, all dogs must be vaccinated against rabies. If the rabies certificate has expired prior to July 1, 2020, please include an updated certificate from the veterinarian in order to register your dog. To check your rabies certificate expiration, and apply for a dog license, please go to our website.

Applications for dog licenses may be made through mail only to the Town Clerk’s Office, Room 313, 50 South Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06107. Licenses will start being mailed out on June 1, 2020.
