State Rep. Kate Farrar (D-West Hartford/Newington), Rep. Tammy Exum (D-West Hartford/Avon), and Rep. Jillian Gilchrest (D-West Hartford) visited classrooms across West Hartford on Thursday for Read Across America Week.
They read Grace for President in honor of Women’s History month as we take time this month to highlight the importance of women in our society and in history. Rep. Farrar, Rep. Exum and Rep. Gilchrest are honored to serve and make their own history as the most women ever representing West Hartford in the legislature.
“I had the pleasure to join the incredible first graders at Wolcott Elementary School for Read Across America Week,” said Farrar.“It was a joy to read Grace for President, an inspiring story about leadership and hear firsthand from these young students about their own experiences of going to vote with their parents.”
“Spending time with third-grade students at Braeburn Elementary School was a wonderful way to start the day,” Exum said. “I joined the students in their library, where they were immersed in the book, Grace For President, and observed how the different candidates ran their campaigns. We also had an opportunity to discuss what they may wish to do when they grow up. As a former second-grade teacher, this day also brought back a lot of memories.”

“It was a true pleasure to have the opportunity to read to the wonderful students at Morley Elementary School in West Hartford in honor of Women’s History Month! I had the privilege of reading Grace for President during Read Across America Week, which took place from March 2 to 6, beginning with the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss,” said Gilchrest. “March is a month dedicated to celebrating reading, with the National Education Association (N.E.A.) working to promote the importance of reading and its benefits, particularly for children and young adults. Across the nation, schools and organizations host events to encourage reading and inspire a love for learning.”
