Alcohol, drugs, unreasonable speed, and reckless driving were cited as the causes of a two-vehicle crash in West Hartford on May 4 that closed Route 44 on Avon Mountain for more than six hours.

The West Hartford Police Crash Reconstruction Team investigated the incident and said that according to a toxicology report Kelly Gregory, 33, of Simsbury, who died at the scene, had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .212 and also had drugs in her system.

The police investigation confirmed that prior to the crash Gregory had been recklessly operating her vehicle in both Avon and West Hartford. Gregory was driving east on Albany Avenue (Route 44) in her 2002 Subaru when she crossed the double yellow center lines and crashed into a 2014 Dodge Durango being driven westbound by Anthony Toland, 51, police said.

Toland sustained only minor injuries as a result of the incident. Both vehicles were total losses.
