West Hartford Police are searching for two suspects who gained access to residents’ homes during the past week under the ruse of being employed by a local water company.

According to police, the most recent incident occurred just before noon on Thursday, when a resident reported that she let a man into her home after he told her he worked for the “water company.” The suspect then asked the resident to run the water in the basement faucet.

The resident told police that when she called down to her grandson, who was in the basement, the suspect quickly left the house. Police said that another male suspect had been distracting the victim’s husband in the backyard.

Police said that according to the residents, nothing in the home appeared to be missing.

Officers canvassed the neighborhood, they said, but did not located the suspects.

Thursday’s incident took place at 5 West Maxwell Dr. A similar incident took place on Sept. 24, at 197 Milton St.

Utility workers should always wear identification badges that are clearly visible, and police are warning residents to be alert about this type of incident. Police are also asking for any information the public may have about the two suspects. The man who entered the home is described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, wearing work apparel with no markings. The second suspect is also a white male and 5 feet 9 inches tall. No information was provided about his clothing.

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Hartford Police at 860-523-5203.
