A West Hartford resident had a wheel stolen from her car in the Morley area this week.

By Ronni Newton

A Ballard Drive resident went outside Monday morning to find her 2016 Nissan Maxima parked in the driveway – but missing one of its wheels.

She said that evidence indicated the thief appeared to have been trying to steal another one of the car’s wheels.

The victim reported the theft to West Hartford Police, and Lt. Eric Rocheleau said that while this type of crime is not common, it’s not unheard of in West Hartford.

“One is very rare to steal so they were probably scared off by something,” Rocheleau said.

The most common targets for wheel theft are Hondas and Infinitis, he said, and there have been cases where all four tires have been removed.

Rocheleau said that the best way to prevent tire theft is by using wheel locks – a lug nut that requires a key for removal.

Anyone with information about Monday’s incident is urged to contact police at 860-523-5203. Police also urge residents to contact them whenever they see something suspicious taking place in their neighborhood.

  • Good to know about using wheel locks. It is freaky to think you could go outside and the wheels on your car are gong! Should be grateful the car is still there?!!!!! Yikes! I love Ballard it is one of my favorite streets, it reminds me of a Norman Rockwell painting, the sidewalks and kids often playing, now it seems a little scary.
