With a current membership of over 150 elected women artists, Connecticut Women Artists (CWA) has supported and promoted women in the visual arts for 91 years. Sparked by the 1929 landmark exhibition of 13 women artists at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CWA has continued to hold annual exhibitions showcasing a variety of artwork including drawing, illustration, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, clay, metal, glass, and fiber. CWA’s juried exhibitions, which take place at galleries and museums across the state, are a testament to the experience and mastery of these creative women.

Our annual National Open Juried Exhibition, held this year at the West Hartford Art League from Oct. 16 to Nov. 13, is open to women across the country. This year we received 501 submissions from women living as far away as California and Texas.  Juror Lisa Hayes Williams, Associate Curator, New Britain Museum of American Art, chose 223 of the 501 entries. The juror will also choose six works for awards totaling $2,000.

Seven West Hartford women are represented in the show: Diane Cadrain, Susan Goldberg, Karen Israel, Rebecca Paul, Phyllis Small, Anna Webersen, and Gretchen Wohlgemuth.

Also, our CWA annual Members’ Juried Show, held each spring, has now taken place at the Art League of New Britain for the past four years. In addition to showcasing the art of our members, this show serves as the venue for our two chosen winners of the local High School Regional Scholastic Art Competition, an event held annually at the University of Hartford and sponsored by the Connecticut Art Educators Association. CWA is a proud sponsor of this competition, selecting two winners each year since 2014. These young, talented artists are invited to exhibit with us at our members’ show.

Finally, our CWA Council Show, held in various locations across the state, showcases the work of our present council members and officers. In 2023 it will be held at Cave A Vin in New Haven, dates TBD.
