A resident and two pets were able to safely evacuate a home on Dayton Lane in West Hartford when a fire broke out early Tuesday evening, but two firefighters were injured as a result of the incident, which also caused significant property damage.
West Hartford Fire Department Assistant Chief Jay Silver said the fire on Dayton Lane was reported at 5:29 p.m. on Tuesday, April 22. Units arrived at the scene in six minutes, and found a significant volume of fire at the single-family home, which is located on a small dead-end street off Albany Avenue west of Mountain Road.

Flames were visible in the rear and side of the homeland a lower-level garage and rear deck, as well as several trees on the property and a vehicle located in the driveway, were also on fire, Silver said.
Units aggressively attacked the fire from the exterior, while crews also ensured that all occupants had evacuated and searched for fire on the interior of the residence.

It took an estimated 45 minutes from the time units arrived for the fire to be placed under control, Silver said.
While the occupant of the residents and pets were unharmed, Silver said that two firefighters suffered minor injuries that required further evaluation.

The West Hartford Building Department will be evaluating the structure to determine if it is habitable, and representatives from the American Red Cross provided assistance at the scene to assist with relocation.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately determined, and is under investigation by the West Hartford Fire Marshal’s Office.
“West Hartford Fire greatly appreciates the assistance of our partners from West Hartford Police, AMR, and UConn Fire Department at the scene and New Britain Fire Department, Newington Fire Department, and Avon Fire Department for providing station and town coverage while WHFD units were committed to the incident,” Silver said in an email.
