Two Conard seniors who have been friends and teammates since their days at Duffy Elementary School signed Letters of Intent Wednesday to finalize commitment to continuing their athletic careers at the collegiate level.

Clara Capone will swim for Division I Seton Hall University, and Marissa Haverty will join both the swimming and lacrosse teams at Division II Assumption College.

“She has been waiting for this day for a while,” West Hartford Athletic Director Betty Remigino-Knapp said of Haverty.

Remigino-Knapp said that Haverty has fought back after several devastating injuries (torn ACL as a junior and torn labrum as a freshman) to become the leading scorer for the Conard lacrosse team. Heading into her senior season, she is already ranked sixth overall for Conard in career points and has been named All-State and All-Conference.

Haverty’s name is also on the plaque in Conard’s gym lobby as a record-holder for swimming, as a member of the 2013 200-yard freestyle relay.

Haverty, the daughter of Jennifer and Tim Haverty, was also joined at the signing by Conard head lacrosse coach Megan Cersosimo and head swim coach John Smachetti.

“You started to hear her name immediately,” Remigino-Knapp said of Capone’s arrival at Conard as a freshman.

Capone, who is captain of Conard’s swimming and diving team, certainly lived up to expectations. She is a two-time All-State swimmer and has been All-Conference and All-Academic for all four years at Conard. Capone currently holds five school records: 200-yard medley relay, 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard freestyle, 100-yard backstroke, and 200-yard freestyle relay.

In addition to swimming for Conard, Capone has also been a valued member of the West Hartford Aquatic Team coached by Rob Riccoban who attended the signing ceremony along with Conard head swim coach Smachetti.

Capone is the daughter of Kathy and Mike Capone.
