Delamar West Hartford is delighted to introduce its first artist-in-residence, Ellen Carey. Ellen is a multifaceted figure in the art world—an educator, independent scholar, guest curator, and photographer renowned for her lens-based artistry. With a distinctive experimental approach spanning several decades (1974-2023), Carey has captivated audiences through 70 one-person exhibitions held in museums, alternative spaces, universities, colleges, and commercial galleries.
To commemorate this distinguished partnership, we have meticulously crafted an exclusive hotel package called “See What Develops with Ellen Carey” that extends an invitation for guests to engage directly with the renowned artist. This unique offering goes beyond the ordinary, providing a harmonious blend of art, culture, and culinary experiences.
Known for her innovative approaches in process, exposure, and paper, Carey’s artistry intertwines with Connecticut’s rich history, particularly its contribution to 20th-century advancements in instant technology and visual art. Connecticut holds a special place in the legacy of instant technology, being the birthplace of Edwin Land, the founder of the Polaroid. Ellen Carey, living, teaching, and creating art in Connecticut, pays homage to this legacy by working with one of Edwin Land’s original Polaroid 20 X 24 cameras. The Polaroid is a well-known camera all over the world, and Carey’s artistry with the original Polaroid camera adds a unique and personal touch to this experience.
Upon arrival, guests receive a warm welcome to their luxe accommodations featuring a bottle of private-label Artisan champagne and a colorful culinary creation by our Executive Chef. The package extends beyond the hotel with complimentary entry to the New Britain Museum of American Art, where Carey’s “Struck by Light” exhibition is showcased until February 16th. The retreat’s highlight includes an intimate gathering with Ellen Carey for Cocktails & Conversation, coupled with a Polaroid tips session. This precedes the Palette to Palate Dinner, a pre-fixe menu inspired by Carey’s artworks.
“I’m very excited and honored to be the first artist-in-residence at Delamar West Hartford,” stated Carey. “Reflecting on some of my work showcased at the Delamar reminds me of a quote by Martin Buber when he says, ‘All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveler is unaware.’ This is a metaphor for my life, in fact, all our lives, as we travel. So, take me to the Delamar and let us ‘See What Develops!'”
“We are thrilled to welcome Ellen Carey as our first artist-in-residence at Delamar West Hartford,” stated Erin Spiegel, Director of PR and Communications at the Delamar Hotels. “Her unique lens-based artistry and experimental approach have captivated audiences worldwide, making her an exceptional addition to our creative community. With the launch of our exclusive package, we invite guests to immerse themselves in the intersection of luxury and art, forging a truly unforgettable experience inspired by Ellen’s transformative work.”
