Former Conard softball coach Tom Verrengia (1996-16) was inducted into the USA Softball of Connecticut Fastpitch Hall of Fame as a player and a coach on Saturday, Oct. 22 during a dinner held at Whitney Farms Golf Course in Monroe.
During his 21 seasons at Conard, Verrengia’s teams won five league titles – in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2007, and 2009. They were the Class LL state champions in 2011, and won 282 games throughout his two-plus decades as the head coach.
Prior to succeeding Pam Moffo in 1996, Verrengia spent three seasons as the freshman softball coach at Hall under head coach Kathy Sweetland. Verrengia, who has been coaching travel softball with the Connecticut Tigers for the last 22 years with his brother-in-law, Steve Markie, was one of nine inductees into the Fastpitch Hall of Fame.
According to Hank Kortikoski, the Commissioner for USA Softball of Connecticut, “We are very happy and proud to have inducted Tom Verrengia into our USA Softball of Connecticut Hall of Fame. He has had, and is having, an outstanding career as a player and coach. It is quite obvious that he is loved by so many people that have been touched by him on and off the softball fields. He is more than deserving to receive this prestigious award. Tom’s involvement in our organization has made our organization better.”
USA Softball of Connecticut, formerly known as Connecticut ASA, began inducting players and coaches into their fastpitch Hall of Fame in 1971. Verrengia is the third West Hartford native to receive this distinction following James Berry in 2001, and Vincent Mahoney in 2014.
