An investigation by Farmington Police indicated that several female parties were involved in an altercation on the Westfarms. property that led to an 18-year-old sustaining stab wounds to her leg Sunday afternoon.
According to Farmington Police Lt. Kyle A. Noddin, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:25 p.m. Sunday, March 30 to the upper level of a garage at Westfarms after a reported fight taking place among a group of females. West Hartford Police also responded to the scene at the mall, which spans the two towns.
Responders provided immediate medical attention to one party, 18-year-old Destiny Burgos of Hartford, who was involved in the fight and sustained non-life-threatening stab wounds to her leg. Burgos was transported to an area hospital for further treatment of her injuries.
According to police, an investigation determined that the group of mostly juveniles had come to Westfarms “for a fight.” They walked out of an upper-level, sparsely-populated parking garage, and Burgos began fighting with a 15-year-old female, who is not being identified by police due to her age.
“During the fight, while other juvenile attendees were recording with their phones, the 15-year-old suspect retrieved a pocketknife from her pocket and stabbed Burgos multiple times in the leg before fleeing the scene with her accomplice,” police said in a press release on Monday morning that provided updates regarding the incident.
Four individuals, including three juveniles, were determined to be the primary instigators, Noddin said, and all were charged with second-degree breach of peace.
The 15-year-old stabbing suspect was taken into custody and also charged with first-degree assault and first-degree reckless endangerment.
Burgos, the only party to be identified since she is the only one not a juvenile, was also charged with third-degree assault and scheduled to appear at Hartford Superior Court on April 8, according to police.
A search of the wooded area outside Westfarms – the area to which the two suspects had initially fled – by a K9 team from Bristol led to the recovery of the pocketknife, police said.
“The safety and security of our customers and employees is our first priority, said Amanda Sirica, spokesperson for Westfarms. “This isolated incident is unacceptable conduct and undermines our family friendly standards at Westfarms.”
Sirica added, “We thank the police and security that acted swiftly to restore normal operating conditions in our parking lot. We continue to actively assist the Farmington police investigation into this matter.”
