To the editor:

After Ryan Fazio’s campaign sent a third postcard to this registered Democrat trashing the economic policies of Governor Ned Lamont, I decided it was time to help set the record straight.

Fazio’s claims that the Governor has simply made life more expensive for Connecticut’s working families conveniently leaves out significant countervailing facts…like that Governor Lamont signed the largest income-tax reduction in Connecticut history, lowering the state’s two lowest income-tax rates and expanding other tax relief measures. Or that under his leadership, Connecticut has balanced its budget year after year, paid down billions of dollars in pension debt, and built up reserves to help protect taxpayers when the economy takes a downturn.

Fazio is hoping you don’t realize that many of the biggest drivers of the affordability complaints we hear are influenced by national economic conditions. It’s why, for example, the Greenwich Republican will never publicly acknowledge that Donald Trump’s pointless war with Iran has
caused gasoline and heating oil prices to skyrocket.

Nor will Fazio find the nerve to criticize Trump for the 50% tariff he imposed on various Canadian goods, putting additional strain on Connecticut’s economy.

The goal of any Governor should be to leave the state in better financial shape than they found it. That requires making tough decisions, living within our means, and thinking about the burden we leave for the next generation.

There is still work to do, and I want our state to continue being disciplined about spending. But I also believe we should recognize responsible leadership when we see it.

Governor Lamont has made Connecticut’s long-term financial health a priority. I want him to keep building on that progress.

And to add another note to that, Governor Lamont has increased funding for each child care programs, which helps make it more affordable for families, who then have more money to spend in the local economy. It helps, even if a little bit, give breathing space for people to have children. In CT and the US our low birth rate has plummeted the past 10-15 years below the replacement rate of 2.1 to 1.6 and the US is now at a point of shrinking population. Without migration to the US we’d be potentially losing population like China, Greece, Japan, etc now instead of 30 years from now. If Ryan Fazio were to slash child care funding that would add more to CT’s population struggles and put more strain on our local economy with not enough upcoming graduates to fill open jobs in the state.
