To the Editor:

It is with great enthusiasm that I write to support the re-election of West Hartford Council member Mary Fay.

Mary is active in the community, and her service as a member of the Town Council gives her great insight into the needs of our residents and our businesses. In addition, Mary has the financial knowledge, leadership, ability to reach across the aisle, and sense of fairness and integrity that make her a superb councilor.

West Hartford is a great place to live, and we all love the parks, vibrant center(s), schools, and other attributes. The things that make West Hartford great: Diversity, small business economy, and a wide range of ages and economic demographics are difficult to maintain with rising taxes and rents. Seniors are leaving, and small businesses are closing up shop.

West Hartford faces many of the challenges our state does. Salaries, pensions, and healthcare are a large component of our budget, and rising! In the coming years the Council is going to have to deal with a budget that is being squeezed by the cost of underfunded pensions and healthcare plans.

Mary is uniquely qualified to deal with issues of pensions and healthcare. She has previously served as a senior vice president at GE Capital with responsibility for evaluating pensions and retirement plans. She has been an executive at AIG evaluating and structuring healthcare plans.

Real change can only come from someone with actual policy differences from our existing Democratic candidates. The majority party, Democrats, agree with predecessors on virtually every policy issue. Some Democrats have been in office for 14 years or more, and all we have seen is tax and expense increases. Other municipalities have been able to keep taxes flat, and Ms. Fay has asked West Hartford to do the same. Mary Fay, the Republican candidate, has the will, the energy and the skills to understand the issues and to make changes, always relying on her sense of fairness.

Mary believes that West Hartford needs real change to fix our broken economy. She brings with her a desire to solve the fiscal problems of the town and not just learn to live with them. Mary Fay will work with anyone to get things done. She is hard working, and is clearly the best qualified candidate to be re-elected to the council. I strongly urge you to support her.

Sincerely,

Dennis Swanton
West Hartford

Editor’s note: The writer is the chair of the West Hartford Republican Town Committee.
