On Memorial Day, We Say ‘Thank You’

Memorial Day in West Hartford is a day that many use for celebration, but it’s also a time we should remember to thank our veterans – those who are still with us and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Many people traditionally see Memorial Day weekend as a holiday weekend meant for barbeques, beaching and boating, parade-going, and other fun family activities that begin the “summer” season.

Memorial Day, which was originally called “Decoration Day,” has been celebrated since just after the Civil War. We urge you to take the time to also appreciate what the day really means – a day meant to honor those who died in military service.

When you’re participating in those “traditional” Memorial Day activities, take a moment to think about the men and women who are brave enough to have done, and continue to do, the things that many of us never would do ourselves, who put themselves in danger for the love of their country and to protect the way of life and freedom that the rest of us love.

If you’re at the parade, give an extra special wave to Richard Hennessey, this year’s grand marshal of the West Hartford Memorial Day Parade, and all of the other veterans who are marching, riding, or being honored during Monday’s event. Attend the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial right after the parade.

Think about your parents, or grandparents, or other relatives or friends who have bravely served this country.

No matter where you are this weekend, don’t forget what the day really means.

If you would like to share any Memorial Day thoughts, please do so in the comments section.
