The West Hartford Public Library has been teaming up with the town’s Municipal Parking Office for the past several years to create a series of unique banners for display in the Center, and this year hosted a photography contest, inviting members of the community to submit photos with the theme “Pets of West Hartford in the Great Outdoors.”

“The ingenious idea was developed by the Noah Webster Library,” Brooke Nelson, operations manager of the town’s municipal parking, said in an email. “Municipal Parking will produce and display the banners,” she said.

West Hartford Public Library Programs and Publicity Specialist Maura Beaudreault said 24 banners are on display along South Main Street – on the east side from the entrance to Town Hall up to Farmington Avenue, and along the west side of South Main Street between Farmington Avenue and the Memorial Road Connector – for the first installment of this year’s banner series.

“We will probably leave them up for three or four months and then swap them out,” Beaudreault said. Another 24 banners are being produced with additional submitted photos of pets, and those will be displayed next.

The photography contest was promoted through the West Hartford Library’s newsletter, which has roughly 14,500 subscribers, as well as through posted signage and social media, Beaudreault said. Last year the library held an art contest for adults, who were asked to “Capture the Wonder of West Hartford” with their illustrations for the banners. In 2022, children were invited to submit “My Happy Place” drawings which were chosen for reproduction on the series of banners.

In previous years, the Municipal Parking Office also worked with West Hartford Public Schools on a banner contest.

Beaudreault said she’s not yet sure if another contest will be held in 2025.
