Sonia Plumb Dance Company (SPDC) has announced that photographer Rob Goldman and choreographer Sonia Plumb, a West Hartford resident, will present “The Pearl.” Performances are May 11-14, 2022 at SPDC’s new studios at 960 Main Street, Hartford, CT.
SPDC is thrilled to announce our newest project and first performance of 2022 – The Pearl. Through a poetic interweaving of projected photography and choreography, seven women share the struggles they each endure between their conditioned selves and their true nature. The Pearl is designed to provoke poignant, honest dialogue by intimately confronting the destructive nature of commercially propagated norms. The dancers embody diversity in their cultures, genres, ages, and ethnicities, dancing with their digitally projected selves in an intimate setting. Seating is capped at 30 per performance.
“Rob and I have been in discussions for almost a year about the project,” says Director Sonia Plumb. “While he has photographed many dancers, Rob has never worked with a choreographer and felt this was essential to the project he envisioned. Most of our conversations have been via Zoom and in fact, he will be attending a number of rehearsals remotely as he now lives in the Catskills. The process is entirely new for me as I am pulling movement out of the dancers as opposed to putting movement on and in them. And, Rob has very strong opinions about the digital projections, meaning we have to constantly discuss, listen, share, and learn. I have had to let part of my ego go in order to serve the soul of the project.”
Performances are May 11-14 with a preview performance on May 10. All performances are held at 960 Main Street, Suite 555B, Hartford, CT (formerly the G. Fox building in Downtown Hartford). Tickets range from $5-$50 with a special “pay what you can” performance on May 14 at 2 p.m. All tickets can be purchased here.
The Pearl is supported in part by a generous grant from The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation. Additional donations for the project can be made through The Pearl GoFundMe campaign.
