Dozens of dogs will be splashing around at the annual West Hartford “Pooch Plunge,” which has been postponed due to weather and will now be held on Aug. 24, 2022. Dog owners can bring their dogs for an end-of-summer swim at the pool at Beachland Park in West Hartford.

At previous Plunges, roughly 100 dogs dove in and chased tennis balls and each other.

The event is sponsored by the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition (WHDPC), Town of West Hartford, Uberdog. ZipZyme Omega and Keating Insurance.

The event is a great way for dogs to cool off and is also a fundraiser for a future dog park in West Hartford which is the goal of the WHDPC. Each year before West Hartford closes and cleans the town pools for the season, it lets the WHDPC use a pool for the Pooch Plunge.

The Pooch Plunge will now be held on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2022, at Beachland Park, 847 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford, from 4-6:45 p.m. The cost is $15.

“We are once again thrilled to support the West Hartford Dog Park Coalition at its biggest event of the year,” said Dan O’Brien, owner of Uberdog. “The Pooch Plunge is an incredibly fun time for all. As a business owner that deals with dogs and their owners every day, we fully support the dog park coalition and their great effort to establish a permanent dog park here in West Hartford. I know that our customers will be thrilled once that day comes.”

“Dogs bring joy to our lives, and this is a joyful event,” said David Coleman, co-president of the WHDPC. “We always get a fantastic turnout, and we appreciate the support of the town and our corporate sponsors. The Plunge, our largest fund raiser of the year, is intended to gather momentum for a dog park in town. This event is not to be missed by any dog in town!”

For many years, the WHDPC has been working to find a suitable area in town to put a permanent, fenced-in area for dogs to exercise and socialize. For more information about the WHDPC and to learn more about volunteering or supporting the group, go to: www.facebook.com/groups/westhartforddogpark. On Facebook, over 2,000 members of the community share information, events, local resources, and favorite photos of their four-legged friends.

Attendees can pay by cash or Venmo at the pool or pay in advance via EventBrite. All dog owners will be required to sign a liability waiver prior to entering the pool area.
