Trash and Recycling Pick-up Delays and Fourth of July Closings in West Hartford

In 2024 the Fourth of July falls on a Thursday, and most public and private offices are closed while many retail operations are open.

Thursday, July 4, 2023, is a federal holiday, and most non-retail businesses will be closed in observance of Independence Day.

Trash and recycling collection (this is a “B” week), “B” week recycling, and yard waste, metal and bulky collections will be delayed by one day for those in the Thursday and Friday collection areas. Thursday’s collection will take place on Friday, July 5 while Friday’s collections will be on Saturday, July 6. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday collection areas will not be impacted. Visit the website www.painesinc.com or call Paine’s, Inc. at 860-844-3000 with any questions.

Also in recognition of the July 4th holiday, Town Hall and other town offices, Yard Waste & Recycling Center, Cornerstone Aquatics Center, Elmwood Community Center, both senior centers, and all three library branches will closed on Thursday, July 4. Town camps will not operate on Thursday either.

The following will also be closed on Thursday:

  • State offices
  • DMV
  • Most banks
  • Financial markets
  • State Courts
  • Federal offices
  • United States Post Office

The following will be open on Tuesday but may have special hours of operation:

  • Many retails stores, including Westfarms, but checking in advance is advised
  • Most drug stores
  • Most liquor stores
  • Most supermarkets
  • State and municipal parks
  • Beaches
