Veteran’s Day is Nov. 11, and to honor all of the veterans buried in West Hartford’s Fairview Cemetery, flags will be placed on their graves on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019.

There are more than 1,200 military graves in Fairview Cemetery, and volunteers from the community are asked to assist in planting flags to honor their service to the United States.

Because the ground may be hard, volunteers may want to bring a screwdriver or other tool to aid in planting the flags.

The flag planting begins at 8:30 a.m. at Fairview Cemetery on Pleasant Street.

Flag-planting is a great educational and/or community service opportunity for Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. All are welcome and there is no need to RSVP.

For more information, contact Renee McCue, 860-561-7521.

Anyone who has a relative or friend buried at Fairview whose grave is not properly identified as that of a veteran should contact the cemetery office at 860-561-8136 so that a flag can be planted there.

The town will hold its Veterans Day celebration on Monday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. at the Connecticut Veterans Memorial in West Hartford Center. The keynote speaker will be Cast. M. Patricia Murphy, United States Public Health Service. More details can be found here.

On Monday, Nov. 11, municipal offices, senior centers, the Elmwood Community Center, and West Hartford Public Library branches will be closed in observance of Veterans Day.

West Hartford Public Schools and administrative offices will be open on Monday, and schools will hold special events and ceremonies to honor veterans. All veterans are invited to attend cceremonies at Conard High School (8:30 a.m.) and Hall High School (12:30 p.m.).

The Yard Waste and Recycling Center will be open from 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Monday, and there will not be any delay in trash or recycling collection this week.
