Northwest Catholic High School junior Abigail Casper recently reached a monumental milestone in her basketball career by scoring her 1,000th point.
“It feels amazing to reach this milestone, especially at the beginning of my junior year,” said Casper, who scored her 1,000th point in a win over Middletown on Dec. 19, 2024. “I work so hard and dedicate so much time to getting better at basketball that it feels great to have reached 1,000 points. I have wanted to reach it ever since I was younger and knew that it’s a huge achievement.”
Casper’s journey to this achievement has been fueled by her confidence and persistence. She shared some advice for aspiring athletes: “Even when it’s hard, always have confidence. Confidence has been key to my success at NWC and in my path to 1,000 points. Having confidence and remembering to have fun while playing is huge.”
Casper’s accomplishment also carries a deep personal significance, as it continues a family tradition.
“It is so special to be able to continue the tradition of scoring 1,000 points in my family. I have looked up to my mom in basketball ever since she started coaching me in first grade. I wouldn’t be where I am today without her. I can’t wait until my sister scores her 1,000th point. I’m definitely going to come back from college to see it!”
Northwest Catholic girls basketball coach Alison Connors praised Casper’s relentless work ethic and team-first mentality.
“I am so proud of Abby! She has worked incredibly hard over the past two years. To achieve this milestone in 62 games is extremely impressive. She sets the tone each day in practice and it translates into each game.”
Connors added, “She is the best teammate, incredibly unselfish with the ball, and always puts the team’s needs first. She, along with Zoey [Canning] and Maeve [Staunton], have been program changers. Being the coach, this accomplishment is just so great to see. It shows that hard work truly does pay off. Being a fundamentally sound player pays off. Abby has the ability to play any position on the court and that’s a true testament to her work ethic in the offseason. This moment is all about Abby and her teammates and all that they have accomplished in two seasons.”
The Northwest Catholic girls basketball team is currently 9-0, ranked No. 1 in Class L, and will travel to Bristol Eastern on Friday, Jan. 10.
