Submitted

The West Hartford Democratic Town Committee has passed a resolution calling for the United States Senate to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.

“Our members felt it was important to speak out on this critical legislation,” said West Hartford DTC Chair John Bailey. “While justice will not be fully achieved with the passage of any one bill, it is an important step forward.”

“Words are not enough,” added DTC Vice-Chair Tiffani McGinnis. “We call on the United States Senate to take action and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.”

The text of the resolution can be found below.

West Hartford Democratic Town Committee Resolution on George Floyd Justice in Policing Act

Whereas, May 25, 2021 marks the one-year anniversary of the murder of George Floyd in the city of Minneapolis by Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin; and

Whereas, people of color continue to be disproportionately targeted by discrimination and excessive force in law enforcement; and

Whereas, more effort must be made to combat systemic racism and counter the fear and distrust caused by unjust police practices; and

Whereas, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act establishes best practices for police training and discipline; ends racial profiling; and improves the monitoring and reporting of discrimination and excessive force, and change the culture of law enforcement, empower our communities, and rebuild trust in law enforcement;

Therefore be it resolved that the West Hartford Democratic Town Committee expresses its strong support for the efforts of President Biden, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Schumer, U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Pelosi and our Connecticut Congressional delegation to enact the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act now.

Further resolved that the Chair of the West Hartford Democratic Town Committee shall take appropriate steps to publicize this action and communicate it to Connecticut’s Congressional delegation.
