First responders throughout the Hartford area joined together for a final salute Friday to Lt. Dustin DeMonte and Sgt. Alex Hamzy, and processions traveled nearby highways en route to a combined funeral at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
Parked on the South Main Street bridge over I-84, the West Hartford Fire Department flew a large American flag between two ladders giving a final salute as the procession, accompanied by dozens of police on motorcycles, passed below.
Assistant Chief Hugh O’Callaghan said that departments from Hamden, Manchester, UConn, and Newington helped place flags on the overpasses to honor the two police officers from Bristol who were fatally shot in an apparent ambush while responding to a call on the night of Oct. 12.
“Rest Easy Lieutenant Dustin DeMonte and Sergeant Alex Hamzy,” the West Hartford Fire Department posted on their Facebook page.
