The Conard and Hall teams are compiling some impressive records, and it’s hard to believe that the CIAC season is only in its third week.

Football season finally began for both schools on Friday, Sept. 19, with Hall posting a fabulous 20-14 win over perennial powerhouse Glastonbury. Conard’s starting quarterback Ryan Bell and backup quarterback Devon Pencz both sustained injuries, and the Chieftains lost to Newington 27-22 in Coach Matt Cersosimo’s debut.

The Hall boys cross country team followed up a first place finish at the Haddad Windham Invitational with a second place finish in the “Boys Varsity Large School” race at the 34th Stratton Brook Invitational in Simsbury on Sept. 20. Hall was led by Ari Klau who won the race in a meet and course record time of 16:09.69 and Grant O’Connor who finished second in a time of 16:19.27. Devon Aldave was Hall’s third runner finishing in 14th place followed by Ben Gross in 20th, Max Aronow in 30th, Jonathan Kaback in 36th and John Cassidy in 50th. Hall finished with 67 points, second to Staples High School with 43 points.

Conard sophomore Gwen Geisler, in her first cross country season, is already making a name for herself in the sport. In the Stratton Brook “Girls Varsity Large School” race she took fourth place with a time of 20:30.43 (teammates Eve Gilles, Lindsay Chen, and Margaret Byrne were also in the top 25), and Geisler won Tuesday’s home meet against Bristol Central in 19:47.

The Hall boys soccer team remains unbeaten (5-0-1), and will take on 6-0 Farmington, the top-rated team in the state according to the Hartford Courant, on Saturday at 10 a.m.
