‘Trick or Trash’: West Hartford launches candy wrapper recycling program.

By Katherine Bruns, Recycling Coordinator

Empower your trick or treaters, who may still be munching on the sweets they collected on Halloween, to help the environment by giving them the chance to recycle candy wrappers.

It may seem like a small thing but every action counts and every recycling behavior leads to another. An estimated 7,000 pounds of wrappers were recycled in 2020 which was only the third year of the Rubicon program.

Did you know 6 million pounds of candy are purchased every year for Halloween in the U.S.? Kids may not be able to make big decisions about issues like CO2 emissions and curbside food scrap collection programs but they can start small with this ACTIONABLE behavior.

There are three collection points in West Hartford. Containers are at Town Hall in the main lobby, in the entrance lobby at the Public Works facility on Brixton Street (you can bring candy wrappers when you drop off your pumpkin!), and at Morley School. We hope to keep containers out for two weeks or longer!
