West Hartford Police said a juvenile was struck by a vehicle in the area of Albany Avenue and Lindy Lane on Tuesday morning in an hit-and-run incident.

The incident was reported at 7:01 a.m. on Tuesday, and members of the West Hartford Police Department, West Hartford Fire Department, and other emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.

The victim was a juvenile male, Capt. Aaron Vafiades said, and he was “alert and conscious upon arrival of emergency services.” The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment of what were described as non-life-threatening injuries.

While police did not provide any further details about the juvenile, including his age, Superintendent of Schools Paul Vicinus in an email said the injured party was a Hall High School student who was on the way to school.

“Several motorists, including school staff, stopped immediately to provide assistance. The swift response of WHPD, WHFD, and other first responders ensured that the student received immediate care and that the family was promptly notified,” Vicinus said in an email to the community.

Vicinus also noted that the student was responsive at the scene, and school staff is offering support to the family.

“The safety and well-being of our children is our highest priority. With school back in session, there is increased pedestrian, cyclist, bus, and commuter traffic. I urge all members of our community to do their part in ensuring safety by practicing careful driving, being attentive to road conditions, and always watching for children and pedestrians at crosswalks, bus stops, and intersections. Please join me in keeping the student and their family in your thoughts and in hoping for a full and speedy recovery,” wrote Vicinus.

The West Hartford Police Department’s Traffic Division is actively investigating the incident, and searching for the driver and the vehicle that fled the scene. The vehicle is described as a dark-colored SUV or hatchback.

Police expressed their thanks to the fire department as well as American Medical Response (AMR) for their efforts at the scene of the incident.
