The Amelia Classical Music Series in West Hartford is proud to present DREAMER, its latest concert, this Saturday, March 8, featuring two world-class musicians — Sir Julian Milkis and Anton Batagov.

The concert, a harmonic dialogue between clarinet and piano, will offer a world premiere of original compositions by these two renowned artists. It will take place at 4 p.m. at the Flagg Road United Church at 134 Flagg Rd. in West Hartford.

Sir Milkis, a clarinet virtuoso, has the remarkable distinction of being the only student of legendary jazz clarinetist and bandleader Benny Goodman. His sound, marked by technical ease and keen musical imagination, has captivated audiences throughout the world. His unique interpretations and dazzling artistry have earned him an international stature as a soloist, chamber musician, and jazz clarinetist, with performances at principal venues from the Far East and Europe to the Americas.

He has graced many of the world’s most prominent stages, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Salle Gaveau in Paris, the Great Halls of the Moscow Conservatory, and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. His solo appearances also include The Toronto Symphony, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, State Symphony Orchestra of Russia, L’Orchestre Symphonique Francaise, and KBS Symphony of Seoul, Korea.

Batagov is similarly recognized worldwide. A graduate of the Gnessin School and Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, he was a prize-winner at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1986. He is also credited with introducing the music of John Cage, Steve Reich, Morton Feldman, and Philip Glass to Russian audiences.

Batagov’s post-minimalist compositions are stylistically rooted in the harmonic and rhythmic patterns of Russian church bells and folk songs, mixed with the spirit of Buddhist philosophy and the dynamic pulse of early Soviet avant-garde. His discography includes over 50 albums. He is also the composer of several movie soundtracks. He has performed at The Grand Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Jordan Hall in Boston, the Berliner Philharmonie, Philharmonie de Paris, and countless other venues worldwide.

The Amelia Classical Music Series was founded by local opera singer Zhanna Alkhazova-Isenberg last year in an effort to bring world-class musicians here to West Hartford. Saturday afternoon’s concert will run about 90 minutes, including a short intermission. Tickets cost $40 general admission ($30 for seniors and students).
