The Northwest Catholic girls lacrosse team opened the 2025 season at home in West Hartford with a win, beating RHAM 12-10 on Tuesday, April 8.

The team celebrated not only the win, but also the milestone reached by senior captain Annie Szyluk of West Hartford, who scored her 100th goal on Tuesday – an 8-meter penalty shot – within the first two minutes of the game.

Teammates and fans applauded as Szyluk, a midfielder, who has been a varsity player since her freshman year, starting and taking draws for the Northwest Catholic team. She missed some time her junior year with a concussion, but is back at full strength now and after her 100th goal, went on to find the back of the net a total of six times in the win.

Head coach Karen Nell is in her second season with the Lions, joining the team from the University of Saint Joseph. West Hartford resident Jill Gengras is the team’s assistant coach. The team is small, and like many of the starters, Szyluk plays nearly every minute of every game because there are few subs available.

On Tuesday, Northwest also received significant contributions from senior captain Ruth Peters (West Hartford) who provided strong defense in the backfield, and Maddie Rudy (Avon), a junior captain and midfielder, who scored three goals and had three assists. Junior goalie Tiegan Poduje (West Hartford) made multiple saves in goal.

Scoring on Tuesday included:

  • Annie Szyluk (West Hartford): 6 goals
  • Maddie Rudy (Avon): 3 goals, 3 assists
  • Mary Peters (West Hartford): 1 goal, 1 assist
  • Charlotte Page (West Hartford): 1 goal
  • Grace Conaghan (West Hartford): 1 assis
  • Summer Tabard: 1 goal

The Lions will next host Brien McMahon (Norwalk) at home on Saturday on the Northwest Catholic turf at noon.
