Community Discussion on Diabetes Will Be Held on November 14

Three organizations will present a community discussion on diabetes at the University of Hartford in West  Hartford.

The Mercy Community, Duncaster Retirement Community and the University of Hartford’s Presidents’ College  will co-host the Community Roundtable Discussion “The Changing Landscape of Diabetes” on Friday, Nov. 14 at 9 a.m. This informative and inspiring event will be held at the Wilde Auditorium on The University of Hartford campus; it is open to the public.

“The Changing Landscape of Diabetes” will be immediately followed by a luncheon in the 1877 Club in the University’s Harry Jack Gray Center at 11:45 a.m. Family caregivers, professional caregivers, and individuals living with Diabetes are urged to attend. Accessible parking and seating will be available.

The morning presentations are free of charge; tickets for the luncheon are $35 per person. Advance registration is required for the free morning discussion as well as for lunch.

Featured Speakers will include:

Susan Gluck, LCSW: A Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Susan was employed by the State of Connecticut for 35 years, providing therapy to adolescents and families at Housatonic Adolescent Hospital and Riverview Hospital for Children and Youth.  Her tenure with the State also included employment at Capital Region Mental Health Center as an outpatient therapist with psychiatrically impaired adults. Susan was diagnosed with diabetes 46 years ago at the age of 15.  She has been insulin dependent since her diagnosis and an insulin pump user for the past 18 years.

Jacob Harney, Ph.D.: Chair of the Department of Biology and director of the Neuroscience Graduate Program at the University of Hartford, Dr. Harney’s research interests include brain energy metabolism, the influence of dietary manipulation on cognitive function, brain aging, and neurodegenerative disorders.

Garry W. Welch, Ph.D.: Dr. Welch, Director of the Behavioral Medicine Research Division of Baystate Medical Center’s Psychiatry Department in Springfield, MA, also holds the position of Research Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, MA. He specializes in diabetes and obesity.

M. Nathan Lassman, MD: As Associate Clinical Professor, University of Connecticut School of Medicine in Farmington, CT, Dr. Lassman specializes in Internal Medicine, Diabetes and Endocrinology. He is also a Senior Attending Physician of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center in Hartford, CT and Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology/Diabetes/Metabolism.
