The most recent issue of “Council Briefs” published by the Town of West Hartford contains several interesting news pieces about the West Hartford Police Department, including summer assignments and awards.

These news items include:

  • Community Policing. Three police officers will be assigned to specific neighborhoods this summer. Officer Stacy Thomas will be assigned to the HANOC, Hillcrest Area Neighborhood Outreach Center, Bicycle Officer Aaron Vafiades will be assigned to the Elmwood/Beachland Park area, and Bicycle Officer Kevin Harrison will be assigned to the Park Road/Kennedy Park area.
  • Meet Your Beat Officer. In addition to being assigned communities to cover for the summer, once a month these officers will host a Meet Your Beat Officer meeting at local business. The officers will listen to community concerns and offer information on the programs that are available at the police department.
  • Police Cadets Shine. On Saturday, May 2, eight West Hartford Cadets participated in the 24th annual CT Stations Day Competition sponsored by Northeast Regional Law Enforcement Educational Association. Two cadets placed first in the DUI event and two took second in the robbery scenario. There were approximately 385 youth competitors and 90 staff members from CT, MA, NH and NY.
  • Leadership Initiative. In a first-ever effort, 14 police sergeants from Hartford, East Hartford and West Hartford recently graduated from the eight-week Community Policing Leadership Initiative run by Leadership Greater Hartford. WHPD Sgt. Anthony Anderle was among the graduates. The program required each sergeant to research and write about an important aspect of community policing and share his findings with his police chief.
