Final Event Seals Win for Conard Boys Swimming and Diving

The Conard boys swimming and diving team hosted Farmington in West Hartford.

Conard boys swimming and diving defeated Farmington on Tuesday afternoon 96-87 in a down-to-the-last-event match up that pushed both teams to some of their best performances of the season.

The meet started with Nathan Lowney, Zach Goslee, Connor Faga, and Luke Scheinfeldt combining to take first place in the 200 Medley Relay, giving the Red Wolves an 8-6 advantage over the River Hawks.

While Farmington’s Matt Michitti was able to secure the top spot in the 200 Freestyle, Conard’s Matt Krol, Ethan Hunt, and Colby Dainiak combined for a 2-3-4 finish netting the team 9 points to Farmington’s 7, increasing the Conard lead to 17-13. Andrew Phan cruised to first in the 200 Individual Medley, but Farmington’s strong showing from Rocco Guglielmo, Sam Burns, and Roque DiCristoaro won the event 9-7 when they secured the second through fourth place finishes.

The teams split the 50 Freestyle 8-8 behind Scheinfeldt and Goslee’s 1-4 finish, giving the Red Wolves a 2 point advantage at the break for diving.

On the board Farmington’s Riley Cambi took the first place spot, however Henry Plocharczyk and Yohannes Robson finished second and third for Conard, increasing the Red Wolves lead to 3 points as the back half of the meet began.

In the 100 Butterfly, Michitti notched his second win of the day, surviving a tough challenge from Faga who finished less than a second behind him. Phan and Dainiak grabbed the third and fourth place spots increasing Conard’s lead to 48-43.

Conard went on to extend their lead to 11 points behind Scheinfeldt and Lowney’s 1-3 finish in the 100 Freestyle, and Krol and Hunt’s 1-2 finish in the 500 Freestyle, but Farmington answered back in the 200 Freestyle relay, taking first and third and cutting their deficit back to 5 points before the final three events of the day.

Lowney took first place in the 100 Backstroke, while teammates Kian Abolfath and James DeLibero finished fourth and fifth to give the Red Wolves a 9-7 advantage in the event, pushing the score to 80-73. In the 100 Breaststroke Faga and Goslee gave Conard their second 1-2 finish of the day, pushing the score to 90-79 in their favor. With just the 400 Freestyle Relay remaining, Conard only needed a third place finish to wrap up the meet. Phan, Krol, Lowney, and Faga easily took second in the event, while Dainiak, Hunt, Matthew Robinson, and Goslee finished third, closing the meet at 96-87 for the Red Wolves.

Conard is now 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the CCC West.

In addition to the win the following qualified for the state tournament:

  • Ethan Hunt: 200 Freestyle, 500 Freestyle

Conard’s next meet takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 18 against Northwest Catholic-East Catholic Co-Op at Cornerstone Aquatic Center.
