In West Hartford, where members of the Town Council Public Safety Committee heard a presentation on Flock cameras on Aug. 4, the town manager said the governor’s directive will be followed.

Gov. Ned Lamont is urging all Connecticut municipalities to immediately pause the installation of any new “safety cameras” and automatic license plate readers.

The governor sent a letter to the Connecticut Police Officers Standards and Training Council on Friday asking the group to conduct a review of the increased use of all automated cameras, including automated speed cameras and ALPR technology such as Flock cameras. Many of the state’s residents are “justifiably concerned” about the privacy issues that can result from the use of this public safety technology, Lamont said in his letter.

“We will follow Gov. Lamont’s directive to pause the installation of any new license plate reader cameras for 30 days and continue to monitor guidance from the state,” West Hartford Town Manager Rick Ledwith said in a text on Saturday, Aug. 8.
