To the Editor:

Since May, I’ve walked nearly every street across southern West Hartford to hear what matters most to you. These neighborhoods will now join together with western Newington as the 20th state legislative House district. As the state Representative for the 20th District, I’m running for re-election to be a champion for our community – for all of us.

I’ve talked with people like Andrew, who’s concerned about the costs of inflation, and Carrie, who is eager to see a greater investment in education.

In my first term as a state legislator, I worked each and every day with community members as we navigated COVID-19 together and set a course for recovery.

As state Representative, I’m proud of the progress we’ve made.

On the Finance Committee, I advanced the largest tax cut in our state’s history – including the state’s first child tax rebate, larger property tax credits, a phase-out of pension and annuity taxes, and a reduction in the West Hartford car tax.

I fought to expand health insurance benefits for individuals and families, and to protect reproductive freedom with first-in-the-nation legislation that protects our patients and providers from other states’ abortion bans.

I delivered nearly $5 million in state investments for a new community center and environmental clean-up to generate economic development in Elmwood along with street improvements for Park Road. Funding will also support our beloved local arts and culture organizations – Playhouse on Park and the Noah Webster House.

Creating real results on important issues isn’t new for me. I’ve spent over 20 years fighting for working families, women and girls, as a nonprofit advocate and volunteer to pass new laws to improve equity and fairness in healthcare, education, and the workplace. Now as a staff member at Connecticut Foodshare I support many families throughout our state who struggle to afford food and to make ends meet.

From creating a fair economy to defending human rights to investing in education and economic development that supports a greener future – these critical issues need action, and I will continue to forge new partnerships to get things done.

I also want to be there for our neighbors no matter what they need. From each call or email, I’m ready to learn from you and continue to make government work for everyone.

Just as I’ve delivered in my first term, I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow West Hartford Democrats in the state delegation to bring investments to our town. Together, we are charting a bright future for our town and residents.

With so much at stake and the challenges ahead, I commit to bring proven leadership to be your State Representative. I ask for your support and your vote on November 8th.

State Representative Kate Farrar
20th District
