West Hartford Police utilized a deflation device after an erratic driver failed to stop at officer’s request.

A Hartford man who was reportedly driving at a high rate of speed and across front lawns in the area of Ridgewood Road and Tunxis Road Monday afternoon, and refused a request to stop, was apprehended by West Hartford Police who ultimately deployed a tire deflation device to disable the vehicle.

According to Sgt. Amanda Martin, police dispatchers received numerous calls about the driver’s erratic behavior at roughly 1:10 p.m.

Police responded and located the vehicle, occupied by Jared Schlar, 36, of Alden Street in Hartford, in the rear yard of a residence on Tunxis Road.

Schlar, who was the driver and sole occupant, did not cooperate with an officer’s commands and fled the scene, police said, driving on sidewalks “and nearly struck numerous pedestrians,” according to Martin.

He failed to respond to an attempted motor vehicle stop, Martin said, and police successfully deployed a tire deflation device to disable the vehicle. Schlar was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

There were no injuries to any parties.

Schlar has been charged with three counts of attempted first-degree criminal assault, three counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, and one count each of reckless driving, engaging police in pursuit, third-degree criminal mischief, interfering with an officer, failure to obey a stop sign, failure to drive right, driving while under suspension, evading responsibility, and second-degree breach of peace. He is being held on $200,000 bond and scheduled to appear in Hartford Superior Court on Tuesday morning.

He was released from custody earlier this year on a slew of other traffic-related charges stemming from an incident in January, according to online court records, and has a scheduled court appearance on May 3 in connection with that incident.

  • Yes, did you see the police report below that? You have to scroll down to see every page individually and click on “read more” to see the blown up images of each page. It shows that he was involved in a similar incident in Bloomfield near Cigna in January. The report states that he has been the cause of numerous such incidents. Why is this guy still allowed on the road??? Are they waiting for him to seriously hurt or kill someone?

    • Same guy, his license is already suspended but that doesn’t stop anyone from driving.

He is also the guy that knocked over a police motorcycle, smashed the Whole Foods door and plunked himself down in the middle of Farmington Ave a few years ago.

He needs to be committed if he’s not going to take his meds.

      • The fact that nothing preventive has been done by now is completely unacceptable. Our system is seriously failing to protect the public from menaces like this. I hope something is done before he does more serious harm. Why isn’t the news covering this? The public needs to know the extent of this or one day when something even worse happens everyone will be wondering why no one did anything.
