The appointment of a new director of Library Services was announced Thursday night by the West Hartford Library Board.

Laura Irmscher, who most recently was chief of collections with the Boston Public Library, will assume the role as director in West Hartford in January 2022, the Library Board said in a press release.

A seasoned professional with more than 15 years serving the public in a variety of library operations roles, Irmscher began her career as a reference librarian. In her leadership roles with the Boston Library, she spearheaded internal and external initiatives related to operational and financial analysis as well as renovations of several of the 26 branches and construction of a new Central Library in Copley Square.

“During our search process, Laura stood out with her communication and leadership skills and we are excited to see what can be accomplished when she collaborates with our outstanding library staff and the West Hartford community,” the Library Board said in a statement.

Irmscher has an MLIS from Simmons College and a BA in history from Alma College.

The Library Board expressed thanks to Carol Waxman, who stepped into the role as interim director following the retirement of Martha Church in 2020, and to the search committee and staff for their leadership during the comprehensive national search for a new director “with the experience and vision necessary to lead our exceptional library forward.”
