Most Rev. Peter A. Rosazza, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of the Archdiocese of Hartford, presided at the 51st graduation ceremony of Northwest Catholic High School on Wednesday, June 3, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford.

The commencement began at 7:30 p.m. with the procession of the 141 members of the Class of 2015. James Jordano of Avon is the valedictorian, and Sarah McLaughlin of Suffield is the salutatorian. Rev. Henry C. Frascadore, Past President of Northwest Catholic, delivered the Commencement address.

Rev. Frascadore challenged the students to consider an important question: “What would you do for the world if you could do anything?” He told the graduates that each of them is “matchless” and “incomparable to every other human being that ever was or that ever will be” and that they should use their minds, bodies, imagination, senses and spirit to “become the person that God intends you to be.”

Salutatorian Sarah McLaughlin opened the ceremony by encouraging her classmates to remember all the wonderful times they have had together. She stated that, “Our memories are “amazing” because of the NWC community, which gave us more than an education; we were given inspiration to grow academically and spiritually, and we were given courage to meet new people.”

Valedictorian James Jordano quoted Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “If you cannot fly, then run; if you cannot run, then walk; if you cannot walk, then crawl – but by all means, keep moving.” James encouraged his classmates to learn from Dr. King and fashion their lives in a way that they might one day be quotable too and have achieved something great.

The vast majority – 98 percent – of the graduating class will attend college, at such schools as Emory University, Williams College, Tufts University, the University of Notre Dame, Villanova University, Clemson University, Pepperdine University, Boston College, Boston University, to name just a few. Forty-six graduated with highest honors (a 3.67 cumulative GPA) and thirty-two graduated with honors (a 3.33 cumulative GPA). The graduates come from 26 towns across Connecticut.

The class includes one National Merit Finalist; eight other students honored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation; seven students who were named “Summa Scholars” by the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford; four Division I athletes; and eighteen students who plan to play Division II or III sports in college.

“As we bid goodbye to these 141 wonderful graduates, we feel confident knowing that we have laid the groundwork for them to continue their journey to higher education,” states Northwest Catholic High School President and Chief Administrator David Eustis. “They have grown from freshmen four years ago to young adults that have studied their faith, excelled in athletics, performed on stage, and left a mark on their community.” Mr. Eustis also recognized several members of the Northwest Catholic class of 1965, the first class in school history that will celebrate its 50th reunion.
